Yoni Shapira – a true Jerusalemite who’s heritage spans nine generations.
For the past 45 years Yoni has been at the forefront of tourism in Israel, passionately showcasing the wonders of his homeland as a seasoned tourist guide, captivating storyteller and insightful lecturer.
As a dynamic tourism consultant and entrepreneur, Yoni wears many hats. He’s the Chairman of “Moreshet Derech” Israel’s Incoming Tourist Guide Association.
About
Yoni is the founder and CEO of L.H.S.- Landmark Heritage Services, a consulting and project
management company focusing on transforming heritage sites into tourist and educational
attractions in Israel and abroad.
Yoni’s experience in leading model-based projects brought to the creation of the brand "Models –
Tools of Imagination", using models to enhance tourist experiences at heritage, history, and
archaeology sites.
Yoni was the curator and content developer of projects like Park Mini Israel and of the Middle East
experience in Gulliver’s Gate in Times Square to the Mark Twain Heritage Center in Jerusalem.
Orientalism: Culture, Anecdotes and the Holy Land
"Orientalism" is a phenomenon that turned the Holy Land into
the preferred destination for the Western bourgeoisie, while still
in their homes. Curiosity and faith led to exploration.
They began seeking "authenticity" in the Bible that led to a
boom in tourism. A new passion arose for travel books, biblical
archaeology, meticulous mapping of Jerusalem, documenting
the land with photography, collecting “real relicts” and even
models of the city.
Lectures by Yoni
In the 19th century, particularly for American Protestants, the Land of Israel was not just a point on the map — it became an obsession.
Jerusalem: Its centrality in the Mindset of Western Civilization in the 19th Century
Each lecture is a story in its own right, lasting 60-70 minutes of
concentrated enjoyment and learning. They can also be given via Zoom.
This series of six edutaining lectures transports you back in time and thought on a
journey, exploring the culture, politics and science of an era.
The East was not just a place for lust and longing. Figures like theologian Edward Robinson
and artist David Roberts toured the Land of Israel and created for us the fantasy of biblical
landscapes and imagery. But as usual, reality played tricks on them. We will explore how they
influenced Western perceptions.
Lecture 1: Orientalism and the “Lost Magic of the East”

1880, Ulysses S. Grant,
Mark Twain, a roving journalist set out on the steamship “Quaker City” together with a group of
naive pilgrims. he wasn’t exactly impressed with the Holy Land, and in his book “The Innocents
Abroad”, he mocked the Americans who came to the Holy Land, seeking an authentic Bible
experience with wide-eyed innocence. They awoke to a grim reality.
Yoni’s research and findings inspired a PBS docudrama narrated by Martin Sheen “Dreamland:
Mark Twain’s Journey to Jerusalem,” which captivated over 44 million viewers in the USA.
How did Jerusalem’s finest hotel in the mid-19th century get lost for
about 130 years?
Through my persistent independent archival quest and research spanning
the globe, I discovered the long-lost location of the legendary
"Mediterranean" hotel in Jerusalem.
This site that hosted Mark Twain in 1867 and served as a hub for
Freemasons and biblical archaeologists like Charles Warren and others.
Lecture 3: The Mystery of the Mediterranean Hotel
Mark Twain opened the door, and Thomas Cook knew how to bring
everyone in. We’ll examine the infrastructure developed that made the
Holy Land, and Jerusalem a leading tourist destination by the end of
the 19th century. We’ll explore the development of hotels, who the
hoteliers were, and most importantly, who were the tourists, and what
were thier stories.

Discovering the hotel was pivotal in the publication of “Tourists, Travellers and Hotels in Nineteenth-Century Jerusalem,” co-authored with PEF Publication, London, 2013.
Every map unfolds a story of motivation, belief and
imagination. It reveals the intention of the mapmakers for
omission or commission of information. It tracks the
evolution of mapping technology over the century’s with
the hope that it will help people find their way and their
destiny.

From the terrestrial to the celestial, from that of the imagination, fantasy and messianism, to that of reality and measurement.
When Westerners couldn’t reach Jerusalem, models of the city were
brought as a substitute. These became a religious and cultural
experience for those who stayed behind. In this journey we will explore
the significance of models that brought Jerusalem home — to museums,
visitor centers, and even amusement parks that became religious and
cultural attractions and still serve as such today.
Lecture 6: Models of Jerusalem – From being there to bringing it home
My Grandfather Avigdor Hameiri was an officer in the Austro-Hungerian Army during WWI,
and a POW in Russia. Being a writer, poet and war correspondant he related to all the major
events that took place in Palestine.

אוריינטליזם: תרבות, אנקדוטות וארץ הקודש
“אוריינטליזם" הינה תופעה מערבית שהפכה את ארץ הקודש לפוסטר המועדף על הבורגנות המערבית. קריאה ולימוד של כתבי הקודש הפכו לתרבות פנאי בו החלו לחפש "אותנטיות". הדבר הוביל לפריחה בארכיאולוגיה מקראית, מיפוי מדוקדק של ירושלים, גלים של תיירות, צילומים, ספרי מסעות, ואיסוף מזכרות ו-"שרידים אמיתיים", ועד בניית דגמים של העיר.
סדרת של שש הרצאות קלילות שייקחו אתכם למסע בזמן ובמחשבה, דרך המשקפיים של התרבות, הפוליטיקה והמדע של אותה תקופה.

המזרח היה לא רק יעד לתשוקה וגעגועים? דמויות כמו התאולוג אדוארד רובינסון והאמן דייוויד רוברטס סיירו בארץ ישראל ויצרו לנו את הפנטזיה של דמויות, מקומות ונופי התנ"ך. הארכיאולוגים הביאו ממצאים מהתנ"ך, אבל כרגיל, המציאות עשתה להם תרגיל. נבדוק איך הם השפיעו על התפיסות של המערב ואיך נשיאים לא תמיד קיבלו מה שרצו.

איך זה שהמלון הטוב ביותר בירושלים באמצע המאה ה-19 נשכח לכ-130 שנה?
בהרצאה הזו, נגלה איך במחקר ארכיוני עקשני חובק עולם ובשטח, מצאתי מחדש את מיקומו של המלון “הים התיכון” בירושלים. מלון זה שיכן את מארק טווין בביקורו ב- 1867, והיה לא רק מרכז לתיירים והרפתקנים, אך שימש גם כבית לפעילותם של מובילי הארכיאולוגיה המיקראית של התקופה כמו צ'רלס וורן, וולסון ואחרים ואף שימש כלישכת הבונים החופשיים בירושלים של התקופה.

התפתחות המלונאות ומי היו המלונאים והחשוב מכל מי היו התיירים, כל אחד עם מוטיבציה ביקור משלו.
הרצאה 4: תיירות לירושלים –תומס קוק, מלונאים, חוקרים והרפתקנים
כל מפה חושפת את המוטיבציה, האמונה והדמיון של משרטט או מזמין המפה. מה שניסו להסתיר מהצופה (הדרה) מלמד לא פחות מהגלוי (האדרה), על מהות המפה, ואיך התפתחות הטכנולוגיה של המיפוי, שינתה את נקודת מבטינו (אוריאנטציה) ואיפשרה לנו למצוא את הכיוון והדרך ליעד הניכסף.
קרטוגרפיה: ירושלים במפות - ממפת מדבא (המאה ה-6) ועד היום, התאור המשתנה של ירושלים למשך הדורות.
מירושלים של מטה לירושלים של מעלה, מתיאור העבר לתיכנון העתיד. מדמיון ומשיחיות למדידות, מחקר ומציאות.
הרצאה 5: ירושלים במפות – בין שמים וארץ
כשתושבי המערב לא יכלו להגיע לירושלים, הביאו את ירושלים אליהם כתחליף. דגמים של העיר הפכו לחוויה דתית ותרבותית לאילו שנישארו מאחור. במסע זה נחקור את חשיבות הדגמים שהביאו את ירושלים הביתה, למוזיאונים, למרכזי מבקרים ואפילו לפארקי שעשועים שהפכו לאטקציות דתיות ותרבותיות "אותנטיות" ומשתמשים בדגמים כאילו גם היום.
